For the love of food and music

13 Feb

The month of love is here and the year really seems to be running away with us at the Alphen Boutique Hotel, which is not surprising with all the developments we’ve had at our luxury hotel over the last while. Even with things being as manic as they are, we have not managed to escape the sometimes frightful but typically welcome bite of the love bug. Luckily for us we have not fallen head over heels for someone, but rather fallen more deeply in love with music and exceptional culinary experiences. Snoop Dogg once said, “It ain’t no fun if the homies can’t have none.” Generally we don’t take well to being told what to do and like to follow our own path, but in this case we’ve decided to take to heart his advice and share our love with you.

Valentine’s Day is the ideal time for us to not only share our love with you but for you to share your love with the special person in your life. After deliberating which of our fantastic 5 star establishments would be best for a romantic night out, we’ve decided that 5 Rooms would be the ideal venue to impress your date, as it is not only intimate but comfortable as well. For this special evening we have put together a fantastic three course menu which comprises of favourites such as our Crispy Duck with Truffle Infused Dauphinoise, Butternut Purée, Seasonal Green Vegetable and Cherry Jus as well as some new items like our Poached Prawns Accompanied with a Herbed Avocado Mousse.

For the love of music and culinary art, we are so pleased to announce the launch of our 5 Rooms music nights every Wednesday to Sunday. Our founder Paul, (the Don of our group of luxury hotels, fine dining establishments and overall culinary wiz in Cape Town) who does not take any half measures, has spent much time and effort into bringing to life this event and we can’t wait for the first evening of entertainment on the 1st of March. The beauty of this event is that it not only incorporates music into your fine dining experience, but that it’s set in our elaborate sanctuary of elegance in the heart of Constantia.

For those who are more inclined to the music and just want to enjoy the ambience of the evening with friends, we will be making available light meals. These delicious canapés will not be crackers and cheese but rather an elaborate display of the culinary flair 5 Rooms is renowned for. Let’s be honest, one cannot survive on food for the soul alone ;)

So now that you know what the order of the day is, let’s tell you a bit more about our talented musician who will be running the show.  Rus Nerwich is a multitalented, saxophonist, composer and writer who began playing at the age of 17 after hearing saxophonist Andy Thomson jamming with his dad, South African drummer, Harold Nerwich. Rus then enrolled in the University of Cape Town’s Jazz Studies programme under the tutelage of Rene Mc Lean. Shortly before graduating he left to go and live in London. This began a 4 year period of travelling and performing. In 2003 Nerwich began recording and released “As Above So Below” a selection of original composition. Early 2004 he recorded “Beyond the Walls”, a unique project that explored the music written in the Ghetto’s and Camps during the Second World War. He toured extensively in South Africa and began touring in Europe with frequent visits to Czech Republic and Belgium. The next few years saw the release of yet another two albums the latter of which receiving a SAMA nomination. With such an impressive biography we have no doubt Rus will keep our guests entertained and coming back for more.

So to summarise (incase this is all just too overwhelming to take in ;) ), Valentine’s Day means three course dinner at 5 Rooms or rather an unforgettable culinary experience in Constantia, and from the 1st of March, you can enjoy live entertainment from Rus Nerwich as well as delicious light meals. Now that you know, we will not accept any excuses and will see you there!
